about

OOOOOOOOF. Well, I don’t know what all to say about this song.
I suppose, let’s start with the vocal sample. A few months before I was violently attacked on the street for being trans, I had asked my local community to provide me short recordings of their experiences with gender. That call went out to everyone and anyone, including Cis-folk. I wanted to try to make an entire album with a testimony per song, but only really got one submission.

I had been working on this groove for a while. There was an abundance of humming and hawing over what I wanted to do with it. I had a drum beat and a variety of chops on the sample, but no real plan for it.

After I was attacked for something that was so truly harmless to that man, I had my plan. After writing Soft Rain as a pure “let it out” exercise, it was time to shout back at the world like I needed to. I have long worn my transition and my queerness as armour to shield others from enduring the suffering I have had. It was time to lean harder into that with my art.

So here’s to showing that man that he can never make me ashamed of who I am. Here’s to showing the world that they cannot beat me down. Here’s to showing the world that trans people are strong, and aren’t afraid of you.

Trans Pride will never die so long as I am breathing.
